Paradise

When I met Caleb Balk he told me he wrote songs. I believed him of course, but we were friends for years before I ever heard a song he’d written. Imagine my surprise when I first heard this deep and intricate song from my friend’s lips. How could he have kept such a talent from me!? Like many creators, my friend so feared that others wouldn’t appreciate his work that he more or less kept it to himself. I’m happy to say that after years of friendship Caleb allowed me to arrange for this recording to be made in early 2018. We’re releasing it today in advance of what is likely Caleb’s LAST SHOW as a resident of Michigan, pending his acceptance of a job in Alaska later this summer. The show is THURSDAY, JULY 12TH at the Romeo Public Library from 7-8pm.  Caleb is accustomed to performing cover songs for crowds, but not so much his own music, which he will be mixing into this final show. Come if you can or send good vibes! Congratulations, Caleb, on this exciting job opportunity in Alaska! Thank you for the privilege of making music with you!

Special thanks to Soundscape Studio & School for the opportunity to record for free in your fantastic space with great instructors and students! Also to Benjamin Warsaw for adding bass, mixing and mastering.

“The world on a rope slung over your shoulder

Your sweat shines with pride as you’re lugging this boulder

A shelf standing bare awaits in the corner

For me to step up

And trade innocence for ignorance

Go back to start, begin again

You’ve told me to see

Forced me to be

The factory you’ve run me through

Plastic wings and stupor glue

Standard pretentious paradise

The world on a chain, you’ve shackled me tightly

Your self-righteous air annoying me slightly

Delusions abound in this war you’ve been fighting

Your time-granted authority, self-proclaimed majesty

Received what you needed and more

Oh, you should be so proud

I’ve noticed you don’t choke like before

A conscience is superfluous anyhow

Trade innocence for ignorance

Go back to start, begin again

You’ve told me to see

Forced me to be

The factory you’ve run me through

Plastic wings and stupor glue

Standard pretentious paradise

The world on a rope slung over your shoulder

Your sweat shines with pride as you’re lugging this boulder

The shelf topples down, discarded disorder

But where is your throne? Oh!

Trade innocence for ignorance

Go back to start, begin again

You’ve told me to see

Forced me to be

The factory you’ve run me through

Plastic wings and stupor glue

Standard pretentious paradise

Trade innocence for ignorance

Go back to start, begin again

They’ve told you to see

Forced you to be

The factory they’ve run you through

Plastic wings and stupor glue

Standard pretentious paradise”
